Waterloo Business Spotlight: Settlement

April 8, 2016Dr. K. AshrafWaterloo

coffee shop in Waterloo, ONNothing beats a perfectly crafted cup of coffee. Whether you like a crisp, light-roasted coffee or a rich bold brew, most of us consider a cup of coffee an essential part of starting your day. Like many coffee drinkers, it can be pretty tempting to go to a corporate-owned coffee shop to get your daily dose of caffeine. While these big-business coffee shops are readily available, you won’t be able to enjoy the unique character independent coffee shops offer. These mom-and-pop cafes don’t just add personality to the community, but they also allow coffee lovers to have a more individualize espresso experience. Here in Waterloo, ON, we are lucky enough to have plenty of coffee shops to choose from. One coffee shop that stands out, in particular, is Settlement, which is just a ten-minute drive from our office on Northfield Drive East. As a small business owner himself, Dr. Ashraf always tries to opt for locally-owned businesses over corporate businesses. With this idea in mind, we’re kicking off our series of blogs dedicated to featuring local small businesses with a look at Settlement coffee shop. Dr. Ashraf takes a break from his usual dental implant and oral health blogs to showcase this local cafe for our readers here in Waterloo. Looking for your next favorite coffee spot? Sit back and learn more about this trendy cafe right here in Waterloo.

Coffee Community at Settlement

Love your cup of joe in the morning? Us too! That’s why we love this local cafe and all of the great brewing options they offer for their customers. You can find Settlement located at 23 King Street right next to Uptown 21. From just the outside of the coffee shop alone, you’ll be drawn into the cafe with its rustic sign and large windows. The inside of this local cafe is even more charming with the trendy decor and unique setup. Settlement features plenty of seating with small intimate tables and bright green cozy seating. The inside of this local cafe also has wooden decor, exposed brick wall, and a wall of plants, which all add to the overall rustic feel of Settlement. The environment is really cozy and welcoming, making it the perfect spot for coffee lovers to meet up.

The whole idea of this coffee shop is based on the idea of the word “settlement.” This is defined as a setting or establishment of people where they can grow, prosper, and exchange ideas. When our community was divided up into several settlements back in 1816, the three original settlements were connected by The Great Road, known as King Street now. Thus, the name Settlement was born! Today, Settlement aims to be a place based on community more than anything else. And of course, it doesn’t hurt that they offer the best cup of coffee in the area!

This coffee shop is careful to provide only the best quality coffee for their customers. In addition to this, Settlement also makes it a point to respect the farmers that produce the coffees that we enjoy so much. Some of the beverages offered at this local cafe include classic espresso drinks like americanos, macchiatos, cappuccinos, lattes, and more. They even offer cocktails after 11 am which includes a local favorite, “Settle Down Roo’s” with Eldorado 5-year Amber Rum, Settlement Co. espresso, milk, orange zest, simple syrup, and chocolate bitters. As for coffee, you’ll find a range of options with choices like a regular drip coffee or French press coffee.

This local cafe also offers a few things to snack on with your drink. They have a toast bar where you can choose two slices of freshly baked bread with different topping. Some topping choices available are peanut butter, Nutella, avocado, fresh jam, almond butter, housemade cream cheese, and more. For more information about this Waterloo coffee shop, visit the Settlement website.

During this difficult time, we are trying to do our part during the COVID-19 crisis. We are continuing to see patients with dentofacial emergencies. This means as one of the few practices remaining open during this pandemic, we are treating patients with emergencies from our fellow dental colleagues, in the Waterloo and Wellington regions (Waterloo-Kitchener-Cambridge and Guelph and surrounding townships)

We hope to assist and help as many people as we can. We also hope this will reduce the number of patients that are visiting hospitals that can be treated by us, thus freeing up time and room for the hospitals and slowing the spread of this virus.

Some additional steps our practice has taken to slow down the spread of the virus and "flatten the curve" are:
- Sanitation of common areas such as the front entry doors and the waiting room in between every patient
- Appointments are spread out so that the waiting area only has one patient at a time
- All front desk staff are wearing masks
- State of the art air purifiers (Surgically Clean Air Units x5 in total)
- Patients receive gloves upon entering the clinic

And of course we have all required PPE protocol set as a standard by the Royal College of Dental Surgeons and the Province of Ontario.

During this time we all need to help each other and do our part, only then can we pull through this quicker and return to a more happy, thankful and prosperous society.

Wishing you all the best of health,
From our family to yours.
